She started working full-time after she graduated from high school, and delayed her undergraduate education to help her single mother to support her five siblings. Alva began to work on her undergraduate degree after getting married and having two children. She persisted with her education and acquired her B.A. after 14 years of part-time studying. Her next endeavor was to enroll in Regent University School of Law in 1998. She received her Juris Doctor degree from Regent after four years of study while continuing to work full-time as a wife and mother of five.
