Student Commencement Speaker Series, Part 6: Chavon Bernard's Road to the Podium

When Chavon Bernard crossed the stage to accept her Associate Degree in Nursing from Bryant & Stratton College’s Hampton Campus, she was closing the loop on a dream she’d carried for sixteen years built on discipline, faith, and the steady refusal to let life’s timing derail her goals. Chavon graduated as Valedictorian of the Hampton Class of 2026, and she was selected to serve as her class’s Student Commencement Speaker.

A Career Rebuilt on Sixteen Years of Experience

Chavon’s road to nursing didn’t start in a classroom. It started in the operating room, where she spent sixteen years working as a Certified Surgical Technologist. “Those experiences shaped my passion for perioperative care,” Chavon shared, “but I knew I wanted to advance my role and take on greater responsibility within the surgical environment.”

Life had its own timing and her path to nursing school had to pause for years before she could pick it back up. “Working in the OR showed me firsthand the impact nurses have on patient outcomes, advocacy, and safety, and it made me want to step into that role,” she explained. That pull toward a bigger part in patient care never left her so when the opportunity finally arrived, she knew exactly where she belonged.

An Education That Sharpened Her Instincts

Chavon credits Bryant & Stratton College‘s nursing program with pushing her further than her years of OR experience alone could. The curriculum challenged her to think critically, refine her clinical judgment, and deliver evidence-based, compassionate care to a wide range of patients.

She acknowledged multiple instructors who left a lasting mark during the road to her degree. Mrs. Bender, her clinical instructor, filled in learning gaps with study games and extra tutoring sessions, and even brought small keepsakes to ease exam-day nerves. Dr. Williams brought a teaching style that made dense material stick while consistently reminding students that one test score didn’t define their success. As well as Ms. Noel who became an encouraging presence in the hallway by reminding Chavon on her hardest days that she was capable of more than she gave herself credit for.

Pushing Through the Hardest Semester

Semester three tested Chavon in ways she didn’t expect. The Med-Surg I and Pharmacology courses she was taking at the time demanded hours of self-study outside of class. The rigor of the material pushed her to dig deeper than her medical background alone could carry her.

“I had to rely heavily on my own discipline, resilience, and determination to get through the semester,” Chavon said. Balancing that workload with family responsibilities brought her some guilt, but pushing through it strengthened her perseverance and reinforced her commitment to nursing.

A Full-Circle Moment

When Chavon learned she’d been named Valedictorian and selected as her class’s Student Commencement Speaker, she was shocked. She was sitting with her husband when the call came in and while her jaw dropped in disbelief, he jumped out of his chair celebrating. “I honestly didn’t expect to be named valedictorian,” she admitted. “I’m my own toughest critic… I never imagined a nursing student would be chosen because of how demanding the program is.”

The message she hopes her classmates remember most from her speech was this, “Stay ambitious, stay passionate, and stay fearless, because success isn’t about perfection, it’s about choosing to rise and showing up when it matters most.”
