Finding a Career to Match You

The time we spend at work can often consume a large amount of our waking hours. So, wouldn’t you rather be doing something that feels fulfilling and fits your personality?

Selecting the right career path for yourself has to do with many factors. Salary and growth opportunities are a couple of ways to decide on a career but making them your only decision makers could put on you a career path where you are ultimately unhappy. In addition to financial reasons, try thinking about what you do well, your passions and your own personality.

To help with your career management, below are four career fields and common characteristics of people who work in each area.

Administrative Assistant – Are you the kind of person who likes to do a lot of different things at the same time? Multi-tasking is the name of the game for the modern day administrative assistant. Your job won’t be to just answer the phone and take notes. You’ll be expected to organize meetings prepare research reports, do some light project management, and manage other tasks around the office, so if you are someone who is excited by not knowing what your day will hold, this may be a good career. Administrative assistants also need to be comfortable with new technology, as they may have to learn new systems or even equipment as their roles expand.

IT – If you are someone who always likes being challenged, an IT career could be a good fit. As an IT professional you’ll not only work on solving problems everyday but the types of problems you solve and how you find a solution may change. Rapid developments in technology means IT professionals need to have a love of learning and be responsive to change. Also, if you work just as well in a team as you do on your own, you might be happy in the field of IT as you’re often called upon to do both.

Hospitality – For someone who likes making people happy, hospitality is the perfect field. Careers in hospitality typically have one priority – make sure the customer has the best experience possible. This means to enjoy a career in the restaurant or hotel business, you need to enjoy working with people and going the extra mile. Being personable also extends to your fellow co-workers. This is a people-oriented industry, driven by hard-working people. Whether it’s your counterpart or your employee, the ability to work well within a team is crucial in this industry.

Paralegal – As a paralegal, you will be responsible for working with clients, and in many cases, you may be the first person a client interacts with when they contact the firm. Accordingly, being friendly is a must. Paralegals and legal assistants are also generally responsible for supporting lawyers by maintaining file systems, doing legal research, and drafting cover letters and other legal documents. That means enjoying research, having strong written communication skills and being a natural organizer will help you do well in the field.

While these personality traits and skills generally fit the career fields above, a variety of people work in them.
