Pelvic Floor Foundations for Orthopedic Therapist

Calling all physical therapists and physical therapist assistants looking to continue their education! The Bryant & Stratton College Wauwatosa campus is offering a new course, Floor Foundations for the Orthopedic Therapist, taught by Dr. Megan Rorabeck, PT, DPT, WCS. Dr. Rorabeck is a board-certified through the APTA as a clinical specialist in pelvic health and has been practicing in the profession for 11 years. She works for Advocate Aurora Health in the greater Milwaukee area as a senior physical therapist and is the Women’s Health Residency Coordinator for the Advocate Aurora Physical Therapy Enterprise.

The purpose of this course is to provide the non-pelvic floor physical therapist and physical therapist assistant with an evidence-based approach to be able to identify those with pelvic floor dysfunction, implement clinical decision making for when to make referrals, and understand appropriate treatment interventions to implement. Therapists attending this course will engage in interactive lectures and lab-based learning to understand the connection between pelvic floor principles and the relationship to orthopedic care.

$120 for 5.5 hours of coursework. The course is split between asynchronous pre-work online (1.25 hours) and in-person lecture and lab work (4.25 hours).

1. Become familiar with the pelvic floor anatomy and physiology.

3. Understand bowel health and introductory information for patient education and when to make appropriate referrals.
4. Implement practical tests and measures to provide basic screening for the pelvic floor- for treatment and referral clinical decision making. 
5. Recognize the connections between the pelvic floor and its correlations to the abdominal wall, spine, and hips.

Asynchronous pre-work online: 1.25 hours
Pre-recorded Pelvic Girdle Anatomy lecture accessible via web link to be completed prior to synchronous in-person course.

  • APTA Position Statements
  • Pelvic girdle terminology & anatomy – bony, ligamentous, muscular
  • Male and female pelvic differentiation
  • The relationship of the core & hip to the pelvic girdle
  • Introduction of signs of dysfunction and referred pain patterns

12:00-12:15: Wrap up, questions, course evaluation
