Associate Professor of Nursing | Program Lead, RN-to-BSN
About
Sandra Whitmore didn’t start her career in a classroom. She started it in the emergency department of a Level I trauma center in Cleveland, Ohio, where she spent nearly a decade as a bedside nurse before moving into clinical leadership as a charge nurse and eventually as nurse manager for a 28-bed medical-surgical unit. That time on the floor – managing codes, working short-staffed nights, and training new graduates who weren’t prepared for what real patient care looked like – is what eventually pushed her toward nursing education.
After earning her Doctor of Nursing Practice from Case Western Reserve University, Whitmore joined the faculty at Bryant & Stratton College, where she has spent the past seven years teaching in the nursing program. She has developed curriculum for four core nursing courses and led the redesign of the college’s clinical simulation lab, which now serves as a capstone experience for students completing their first clinical rotations.
Her approach to teaching is built around clinical decision-making under real conditions. She draws heavily on her years in acute care – patient scenarios, documentation challenges, interdisciplinary conflicts – and translates them into frameworks students can actually apply. Her students consistently rate her courses among the most demanding and most useful in the program.
Outside the classroom, Whitmore remains active in the profession. She sits on the Ohio Board of Nursing’s Education Advisory Committee and serves as a peer reviewer for the Journal of Nursing Education. She holds certification as a Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) through the National League for Nursing and holds an active RN license in Ohio and Pennsylvania.
