Compassion in Critical Care: Saudia Heron's Path to Nursing Excellence

As we continue to celebrate National Nurses Week, we have the privilege of sharing the inspiring journey of Saudia Heron, a graduate of Bryant & Stratton College- Henrietta CampusAssociate Degree in Nursing program, whose story exemplifies the dedication, compassion, and expertise that form the foundation of the nursing profession.

Born to Lead

Some people discover their calling through a specific moment or experience, while others seem born with qualities that naturally guide them toward their profession. For Saudia, nursing emerged as a perfect alignment with her inherent character traits and passions.

“Being the oldest of five girls cultivated me into a leader innately,” Saudia reflects. “I am immensely nurturing and empathetic; I enjoy going the extra mile for my patients.” This foundation of natural leadership and care formed the bedrock upon which she built her nursing career.

But Saudia’s journey wasn’t driven solely by her nurturing personality. She also brings an intellectual curiosity that fuels her professional growth. “I’ve always had a unique fascination with the human body and learning how to thrive in health,” she explains. This combination of compassion and engagement creates the perfect formula for excellence in nursing practice.

Clinical Experiences That Build Confidence

The path to becoming a nurse is rigorous, demanding both academic excellence and hands-on clinical experience. When asked about her favorite part of the nursing program at B&SC, Saudia describes the clinical opportunities that shaped her education.

“What I appreciate most about the nursing program at Bryant & Stratton College was its readily available opportunities at clinical sites,” she shares. “When you’re eager to learn, there’s so much you can experience!”

For Saudia, these weren’t just routine clinical rotations but transformative moments that brought textbook knowledge to life. “I was able to see a lumbar puncture in Pediatrics, participated in delivering a newborn in Maternity, I even went down to the OR to watch a TURP procedure! There were many more cool experiences I’ll never forget!”

These hands-on experiences reflect the immersive education that prepared her for the high-stakes environment where she now thrives. Beyond technical skills, Saudia developed another critical nursing competency during her education. “Effective communication has been one of my strongest and most consistent strengths throughout my experience in the healthcare system,” she notes, recognizing how essential this skill is in coordinating care and connecting with patients and families.

Inspirational Guidance

Behind every successful nursing professional is often an influential educator who helped shape their approach to patient care. For Saudia, that mentor was Ms. Anna Stewart, who taught Medical-Surgical Nursing.

“She helped to deepen my understanding of patient care and strengthened my critical thinking skills in complex clinical situations,” Saudia recalled. “Thank you for the plethora of knowledge Anna! You are truly amazing at what you do!”

This acknowledgment highlights the powerful impact nursing educators have on shaping the next generation of healthcare professionals. Ms. Stewart didn’t just teach content—she cultivated critical thinking skills that serve as the foundation for clinical decision-making in high-pressure environments.

Thriving Under Pressure

Today, Saudia has found her professional home in the Medical Intensive Care Unit, a high-acuity environment that perfectly matches her desire for continuous learning and meaningful impact. “I LOVE it! It’s exactly what I was looking for! It gives me a rush of adrenaline, keeping me on my toes while learning new things every shift!”

This placement in critical care isn’t a coincidence but the fulfillment of a long-held aspiration. “I’ve always had a desire to work in critical care,” she shared. “I do foresee myself working in the Medical ICU long term and evolving within my specialty. I want to learn more invasive procedures.”

Saudia’s enthusiasm for continued growth within her specialty demonstrates the dynamic nature of nursing careers, where continuous learning and skill development create pathways for advancement and specialization.

The Art of Human Connection in Nursing

When asked what she loves most about working as a nurse today, Saudia’s answer cuts to the core of what makes nursing not just a profession but a calling.

“What I love most about being a nurse is being able to be such a huge support to families at such a vulnerable moment in their lives. Establishing trust and advocating for those you’d probably never see again, but they’ll always remember their good nurse. The reward is so grand and fulfilling.”

This powerful statement captures the true essence of nursing—being present for patients and families during their most challenging moments. While the technical skills are essential, it’s this human connection that often leaves the most lasting impression on both patients and nurses.

Inspiration for Future Healthcare Leaders

As Saudia continues her nursing journey, her story serves as inspiration for current and future nursing students. Her path illustrates how natural abilities, when combined with quality education, mentorship, and hands-on experience, create healthcare professionals who excel both technically and interpersonally.

In a constantly evolving field like healthcare, nurses like Saudia represent what the future of nursing looks like—committed professionals who bring both clinical expertise and genuine compassion to every patient encounter. As we celebrate Nurses Week and this year’s theme from the American Nurses Association of the “power of nurses”, we honor not only Saudia’s journey but the countless nursing professionals whose dedication forms the backbone of our healthcare system.
