From Accounting to Art: A Leadership Journey Worth Celebrating
By B&SC Alumni Relations Team
A Legacy of Leadership
We’re proud to spotlight Marie D’Alessandro, a 1986 graduate from our Downtown Rochester campus. She earned her Associate Degree in Occupational Studies (AOS) degree in accounting and has forged an impressive path from processing payroll to becoming the CFO of the North Carolina Museum of Art.
Early Career and Educational Growth
Marie’s journey exemplifies the transformative power of continuous learning and adaptable leadership. After graduating from Bryant & Stratton College (B&SC) she began her career at Blue Cross Blue Shield, starting in payroll before advancing to the Provider Audit department. While building her career in healthcare financial management, Marie pursued further education, earning a BA in Business Administration from Regents College.
Giving Back to Education
Her connection to education deepened when she returned to B&SC as Business Office Director, a role she held for five years. “I was fortunate to be able to give back to the college that gave me my start in business,” Marie reflects. This experience laid the groundwork for her transition into the non-profit sector, where she would find her true calling.
The Path to Cultural Leadership
As Director of Finance at Lifespan of Greater Rochester, Marie contributed to an organization supporting older adults and their caregivers. This role led to a pivotal position as VP of Finance and Administration at the Rochester Museum and Science Center, where she discovered her passion for cultural institutions. Today, as CFO of the North Carolina Museum of Art – often called “the Smithsonian of the South” – Marie combines her financial expertise with her commitment to community engagement and lifelong learning.
Making an Impact
Under her leadership in 2024, the museum has flourished! They can now say they have offered over 1,300 educational opportunities and hosted eight temporary exhibitions spanning diverse cultures and artistic genres. Marie faces the unique challenges of the art world head-on, particularly in creating inclusive spaces and addressing funding constraints. Her approach focuses on developing varied programming for different ages, ethnicities, and socio-economic backgrounds while finding innovative ways to enhance revenue streams.
Leadership Style and College Influence
Marie credits her leadership style to her college experience at Bryant & Stratton College. “I loved the small class sizes and the camaraderie of the cohort experience,” she shares. “This led to the enjoyment of working on a team and supporting my coworkers.” The open-door policy and supportive environment of her instructors influenced her own leadership approach, which emphasizes communication, empathy, and team motivation.
Advice for Future Leaders
For aspiring leaders, Marie offers clear advice: “Be of value to your organization by being positive, adaptable, and taking the initiative. Stay true to yourself and your beliefs and follow your own path into a leadership role.” She emphasizes the importance of accountability and problem-solving, encouraging others to view challenges as opportunities for growth.
Essential Leadership Traits
In today’s fast-paced workplace, Marie believes innovation and integrity are essential leadership traits. She champions the importance of having a clear vision while maintaining self-awareness and resilience. Her favorite leadership quote from John Quincy Adams encapsulates her philosophy: “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.”
A Journey of Inspiration
We’re proud to champion students like Marie D’Alessandro whose education and career path serves as an inspiring example of how dedication, adaptability, and a commitment to lifelong learning can transform not only your career but entire communities. Her story reminds us that leadership isn’t just about managing resources – it’s about inspiring others, embracing continuous learning, and creating spaces where diverse communities can thrive.
