When Jamie Ward left Ireland to pursue his education and soccer career at Bryant & Stratton College in Rochester, New York, he carried with him more than just luggage—he brought the determined spirit that defines his homeland. Now continuing both his education and athletic pursuits at Auburn University at Montgomery in Alabama, Jamie reflects on his journey, his heritage, and how St. Patrick’s Day connects his two worlds. Building a Foundation with Business Jamie’s academic journey began with a strategic choice: a Business Associate’s Degree. “I decided on business because I think it will provide me with many more employment options in the future,” he explains. “I can investigate many fields like management, marketing, and entrepreneurship.” This practical approach to education mirrors the resourcefulness that Jamie identifies as distinctly Irish. In a country where opportunities might not be as abundant as in America, making the most of what you have becomes second nature. The Irish Approach to Athletics Unlike many athletes who point to specific role models, Jamie draws inspiration from the collective achievement of professional soccer players. “I wouldn’t say I have any role models, but they all inspire me to strive for their success,” he shares. “Since playing professionally isn’t that easy, I watch a lot of games, which helps motivate me to pursue my goals.” When asked how his Irish heritage influences his approach to sports and academics, Jamie highlights a cultural difference that has become his competitive advantage: “We in Ireland are not as fortunate in terms of all the resources in the US to meet academic and athletic standards. Because of this, I felt compelled to utilise everything that I was given when I arrived in America.” This appreciation for opportunity isn’t just gratitude—it’s a mindset forged in a culture where, as Jamie puts it, “we don’t get anything given to us easily in Ireland.” This perspective has served him well, as he proudly notes, “I’m doing well so far.” St. Patrick’s Day: A Tale of Two Celebrations As St. Patrick’s Day approaches, Jamie offers insight into how differently his homeland celebrates compared to his adopted country. “With an emphasis on Irish pride and national heritage, St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland tends to remain more true to its origins in religious and cultural celebration,” he explains. In contrast, he observes that “in the United States, St. Patrick’s Day is a more popular and commercialised holiday that is frequently associated with parades and wearing green.” Despite these differences, Jamie appreciates that “both nations commemorate Irish culture and St. Patrick’s Day in distinctive ways.” This bridge between traditions reflects Jamie’s own journey—honoring his roots while embracing new experiences. Looking Ahead: Global Ambitions Currently focused on completing his Bachelor’s degree while continuing to play soccer, Jamie keeps his options open for the future. “After that, I’m not sure what my plans are,” he admits. “I would really like to remain in America and perhaps pursue a career in coaching or, ideally, continue playing.” As we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and the rich cultural exchange that international students bring to our campuses, Jamie Ward’s story reminds us of the value of bringing one’s heritage to new shores while remaining open to the journey ahead. His blend of Irish determination and American opportunity creates a unique perspective that enriches both his life and our community—a perfect embodiment of what we celebrate on St. Patrick’s Day.
