Richmond Campus Winter 2025 Commencement Student Speaker Shares Her Story
On June 13, 2025, the Richmond campus celebrated its Winter 2025 Commencement ceremony, and among the inspiring voices that day was Krystal Whitaker, graduate of the Associate Degree in Nursing program and the ceremony’s student speaker. Her journey from a young woman surrounded by healthcare professionals to a confident, compassionate nurse exemplifies the transformative power of education and unwavering determination.
A Calling Born from Love and Loss
Krystal’s path to nursing began early, growing up surrounded by a “strong line of nurses” where caring for others felt both natural and meaningful. However, it was a deeply personal experience that truly confirmed her calling. When her mother was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer, Krystal found herself not just as a daughter, but as part of her mother’s care team during an incredibly difficult journey.
“It opened my eyes to how deeply nurses impact lives. Not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually,” Krystal reflects. “I witnessed firsthand the power of compassionate care, and it instilled in me a passion to be that source of strength, comfort, and support for others in their most vulnerable moments. That’s when I knew nursing wasn’t just a career, it was a purpose.”
This profound realization became the driving force behind her decision to pursue nursing education at Bryant & Stratton College.
Finding Strength in Community
Krystal’s experience in the ADN program at Bryant & Stratton College’s Richmond campus was marked by the power of community and support. She discovered that nursing school, while challenging, becomes manageable when you’re not facing it alone.
“Nursing school is challenging but knowing you’re not going through it alone makes a world of difference,” she explains. “The bonds I formed with classmates helped me push through even the hardest weeks. We studied together, vented to each other, encouraged one another, and celebrated our wins.”
Beyond the support found on campus, Krystal found tremendous value in the hands-on clinical experience that brought her classroom learning to life. “Getting hands-on practice under the guidance of skilled and compassionate clinical instructors helped bring everything we learned in class to life,” she notes. “The instructors who took the time to explain, guide, and support us made all the difference in building confidence and preparing us for the real world.”
Faculty Who Made the Difference
The faculty at Bryant & Stratton College played a crucial role in Krystal’s transformation from student to confident healthcare professional. During the demanding moments when she felt overwhelmed or doubted herself, the instructors consistently showed up—in classrooms, during office hours, and through encouraging messages that made all the difference.
“They took the time to explain complex material in various ways, offered different study tools to accommodate different learning styles, and reminded us that it was okay to ask for help,” Krystal shares. “Their dedication and belief in me helped me believe in myself. I learned to trust my skills, think critically, and carry myself with confidence and compassion.”
Advice for Future Nursing Students
As someone who has walked the challenging path of nursing education, Krystal offers heartfelt advice to future nursing students: “Keep going even when it gets tough, even when you’re tired, even when you start doubting yourself. The nursing journey is challenging, but it’s also one of the most rewarding things you’ll ever do.”
Her practical guidance emphasizes the importance of using every available resource—textbooks, study guides, instructors, classmates, and even YouTube for visual learners. Most importantly, she stresses the value of community: “Don’t isolate yourself, lean on your peers because they’re on the same path and can help you stay grounded.”
Krystal also emphasizes the critical importance of self-care throughout the journey: “Take care of your mental and emotional health along the way. Success in nursing school isn’t about being perfect; it’s about being persistent.”
Looking Toward the Future
Krystal’s educational journey doesn’t end with her Associate Degree in Nursing. She has her sights set on continuing her education by pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). “I want to keep building on my knowledge, sharpen my skills, and open the doors to more opportunities in leadership and specialized care,” she explains.
This commitment to lifelong learning reflects the growth mindset that has carried her through her nursing education and will undoubtedly serve her well in her professional career.
A Testament to Transformation
Krystal Whitaker’s journey from a young woman witnessing her mother’s battle with cancer to a confident nursing graduate speaking at commencement represents more than academic achievement—it’s a testament to the transformative power of purpose-driven education. Her story reminds us that the best healthcare professionals are often those who have experienced the profound impact of compassionate care firsthand.
The Richmond campus community celebrates Krystal’s achievement and looks forward to the positive impact she will undoubtedly make in the lives of her future patients. Her journey serves as an inspiration to current and future nursing students that with persistence, community support, and unwavering purpose, they too can transform their calling into a rewarding career dedicated to caring for others.
