How to Beat the Returning-Student Scaries
By B&SC Blog Team
Like all fairy tales, it isn’t true. Not even close. But deep down many of us think it is, and when our lives don’t match the story, we feel that we’ve missed out and can’t have the same career success.
These are the Returning-Student Scaries: the feelings of hesitation you get when you want to go back to college but think it’s too late for you. The truth is that it’s never too late to get the career you want. You can beat the Returning-Student Scaries. You just have to do two things: Find your reasons, and find the right college.
Finding Your Reasons
If you’re reading this, you already know that going back to school and getting your degree is the right move. Studies have shown that someone who has a bachelor’s degree usually earns about twice as much as someone who has just a high school degree
But chances are that you didn’t go to college when others did. Or you did go, but it didn’t work out the way you’d hoped. That can create anxiety, and that anxiety can keep you from moving forward.
The key to beating that anxiety is to pinpoint the reasons that you didn’t try college before, or why you dropped out. Maybe you couldn’t pay for it. Maybe you didn’t know what you wanted to do, and so weren’t sure which degree you should get. Maybe you had to take care of your family, and it was simply too difficult to get to classes every week.
It’s not that college “wasn’t for you” or you “just missed your chance.” There were simple, clear reasons why college didn’t work for you before. Take some time to think about what those reasons were. Writing them down can help you know what they were and help you move past them.
Finding Your College
Not all colleges are the same. The right college for you is the one that understands what your challenges are (or were) and is invested in helping you overcome them.
Bryant & Stratton College is different from most others. It’s designed specifically for the millions of students who’ve faced challenges before and are still pushing forward.
