Licensed practical nurses (LPN) play a pivotal role on the health care team. Working under the supervision of doctors and registered nurses, LPNs serve as caregivers and contribute to treatment plans for patients in various areas of the health care field. The Practical Nursing Diploma at Bryant & Stratton College provides students with a pathway to continue their education, allowing them to transfer credits from the PN diploma to the Nursing associate degree program. This opportunity is available upon passing the National Council Licensure Examination for Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurses (NCLEX-PN) and obtaining a Practical Nursing license.

This accredited program prepares students to become licensed practical nurses through a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on clinical experiences.     Admissions Requirements

    Nursing students will be required to complete additional steps beyond the traditional admissions process. These steps include:

    • Students are required to achieve college-level scores on the math and English placement tests
    • Completion of standardized assessments and a specialized nursing assessment
    • All applicants must meet current health record documentation requirements
    • Nursing Program Director Interview: If required, candidates will be interviewed by the Nursing Program Director or another member of the Nursing program staff. This interview is utilized by the Nursing Program Selection Committee along with admission test scores and past academic performance to determine admission
    • Documentation of a recent physical exam
    • Students must submit to a criminal background check and drug screening as required by state and federal law along with clinical facility and Bryant & Stratton College requirements

    The demand for licensed practical nurses is growing much faster than average according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Graduates with a Practical Nursing diploma are prepared to pursue licensure by completing the national licensure examination. This LPN program also provides the educational foundation nurses can use to begin working to become a Registered Nurse (RN) in the future. Licensed practical nurses may work in hospitals, doctors’ offices, nursing facilities, or private homes.

    Bryant & Stratton College practical nursing diploma programs are located in Akron, Parma and Solon, OH; Richmond, Hampton and Virginia Beach, VA; Wauwatosa and Racine, WI.  The Ohio Board of Nursing views Akron as a stand-alone program and the Parma and Solon campuses are viewed as one program.  The licensed practical nurse diploma program offered at the Akron, Parma and Solon campuses have full approval by the Ohio Board of Nursing.  The Virginia Board of Nursing views Richmond, Hampton and Virginia Beach campuses as stand-alone programs.  The licensed practical nurse diploma program offered at the Hampton Campus has full approval by the Virginia Board of Nursing.  The licensed practical nurse program at the Virginia Beach Campus has initial approval by the Virginia Board of Nursing.  The Richmond Campus has full approval by the Virginia Board of Nursing.  The Wauwatosa and Racine campuses are viewed as one program and are approved by the Wisconsin Board of Nursing.

    The practical nursing program at Bryant & Stratton College at the:

    • Akron Campus, located in Akron, Ohio is accredited by the ACEN.  The most recent accreditation decision made by the ACEN Board of Commissioners for the practical nursing program is continuing accreditation.
    • Hampton Campus located in Hampton, Virginia, is accredited by the ACEN.  The most recent accreditation decision made by the ACEN Board  of Commissioners for this associate degree nursing program is initial accreditation.
    • Milwaukee West Campus (with a branch campus in Racine) located in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin is accredited by the ACEN.  The most recent accreditation decision made by the ACEN Board of Commissioners for the practical nursing program is continuing accreditation.
    • Richmond Campus located in North Chesterfield, Virginia is accredited by the ACEN.  The most recent accreditation decision made by the ACEN Board of Commissioners for the practical nursing program is continuing accreditation.

    Effective April 14, 2025, this Virginia Beach Practical nursing program is a candidate for initial accreditation by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing. This candidacy status expires on April 14, 2027.

    Note: Upon granting of initial accreditation by the ACEN Board of Commissioners, the effective date of initial accreditation is the date on which the nursing program was approved by the ACEN as a candidate program that concluded in the Board of Commissioners granting initial accreditation.

    For consideration into this program, a candidate must:

    1. Getting started is simple – complete your free application today and begin your journey.
    2. Provide an official U.S. high school transcript indicating successful completion, or high school equivalency issued by a recognized State Education department (i.e. GED); or. Completion of a secondary school education in a home school setting meeting the requirements of the State in which the homeschooling was provided; or. an academic transcript showing that the student has successfully completed at least a two-year program that is acceptable for full credit toward a bachelor’s degree.
    3. Complete standardized assessments. For Henrietta Campus students this includes TEAS (score minimum 53) and a passing score on a Medical Dosage Calculation exam.
    4. Attain college level placement scores on both the English and Mathematics placement evaluations (except for Henrietta Campus due to TEAS requirement).
    5. Provide documentation of a recent physical exam and other required laboratory test results, including a drug screen, as described in the admissions interview and in the Nursing Handbook.
    6. Submit to a criminal background check and drug screening as required by state and federal law, clinical facility and Bryant & Stratton College.
    7. Complete a Nursing Program Director (or designee) interview.
