This career is treated as part of a broader career, public relations specialist, by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Occupational Outlook Handbook. According to the BLS, these professionals can expect to see job growth of 9 percent between 2016 and 2026. This is faster than the average rate for all occupations, currently at 7 percent. Due to the increased use of social media, social media coordinators will become more in demand. According to a 2017 study done by McKinley Marketing Partners, the demand for social media skills alone within the digital marketing profession was 23 percent.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the largest employers of public relations specialists in 2016, of which social media coordinators are a part, was advertising and public relations services at 15 percent. Educational services; state, local and private made up another 11 percent of employment for these workers. About 9 percent were employed in business, professional, labor, political and similar organizations. Employment by government entities was at about 9 percent.
According to ONET, additional industries employing public relations specialists to a significant degree were scientific and technical services, and health care and social assistance.
Most social media coordinators work in offices, although, according to the McKinley study, telecommuting can be part of a benefits package. Hours can be longer than the standard workweek, and there can be stress involved in keeping abreast of the rapidly changing technology and social media platforms.
